Thirty-one players were dropped from Liverpool’s 2013 100 Players Who Shook the Kop list, as the club’s 2026 edition was revealed.
Liverpool’s new 100 greatest players list was voted by supporters, media and former players, plus an expert club panel, with 1.4 million individual votes.
The previous official list of its kind, published in 2013, had the top three of Steven Gerrard, Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush coming out in the same order as 2026.
However, further down the rankings, there were significant changes.
31 players drop out of top 100

It is a serious indication of the strength of Liverpool’s teams over the years that some of these players haven’t made the 100 greatest ever.
• Javier Mascherano won two European Cups, five leagues and five Copa del Rey titles at Barcelona, but he didn’t make the top 100 for his exploits from 2008 to 2010 at Anfield
• Gary Ablett, who won two league titles and the FA Cup in the late 1980s, also dropped off the list from his 97th spot, as did Joey Jones, Liverpool’s left-back in their first European Cup triumph
• The biggest shift came as Gary McAllister, who was placed at No. 31 in 2013, wasn’t even included in the top 100 in 2026
• Daniel Agger was another notable absentee, having been ranked at No. 45 in 2013, as was right-back Rob Jones who previously came in at No. 85

With 31 players dropping out, 31 must have been added. The majority of the newcomers were those who have made an impact since 2013, but not all.
• Harry Chambers, Tom Bromilow, Ronnie Moran, Phil Taylor, Sam Raybould, Jack Parkinson, Dick Forshaw and Jack Cox are all players from pre-1970 that have been added to the top 100
• The highest-rated new player is of course Mo Salah; he was voted fourth on the list
• In fact, 15 players who made their debut under Jurgen Klopp are now in the top 100

Recency bias is always a factor in any ranking of footballers. This was the case when looking back at Liverpool’s players of the Rafa Benitez era in 2013 and it is no different this time around with Klopp’s team.
Some of the changes in the last 13 years have reflected the realisation that perhaps some of the 2005 Champions League-winning side weren’t quite as good as the nostalgia of their performance in Istanbul suugests.
• Luis Garcia has been relegated 64 places, from No. 34 to No. 98
• Xabi Alonso has also dropped massively, moving from No. 13 to No. 54
• The players to move up furthest are Donald McKinlay, Mark Lawrenson and Sammy Lee, having been promoted 28, 27 and 27 positions respectively
