The breakthrough came in the 85th minute, when Enzo Fernández unleashed a powerful strike to bring Argentina level.
The goal completely shifted the momentum.
Then, with extra time looming, Argentina found the decisive moment.
In the 92nd minute, Lautaro Martínez headed home the winner after another brilliant assist from Lionel Messi, completing an astonishing turnaround.
Liverpool Midfielder Delivers Again
Although Messi provided both assists, Mac Allister’s contribution throughout the second half should not be overlooked.
The Liverpool star helped Argentina dictate possession, linked defence and attack superbly and played an important part in wearing England down before the decisive late goals.
Big matches often require calm, experienced performers in midfield, and once again Mac Allister delivered exactly that.
Heartbreak for England
For England, the defeat will be incredibly painful.
To be leading with only minutes remaining before conceding twice is a cruel way to exit a World Cup.
They came within touching distance of reaching their first final since 1966, only to see Argentina snatch victory at the death.
