Patrick Mahomes is one of the best quarterbacks to play in the modern NFL era. He has been one of the biggest reasons for the Kansas City Chiefs‘ recent success and has led them to win three Super Bowl trophies, and has played in five of them.
Mahomes had a quiet 2025 season, with poor results for the franchise. A horrible injury also forced him to end the season early. He has now responded after he was negatively impacted in the rankings.

The 2025 season saw the Chiefs have a 6-11 record in the regular season, and miss the playoffs for the first time since 2014. A terrible ACL and MCL tear back in December 2025 also caused him to undergo surgery, and miss the rest of the season.

The 30-year-old has been ranked first place in ESPN’s annual quarterback rankings for the last three years in a row. But the poor 2025 season has seen him drop into the No. 2 quarterback spot, behind Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen.
However, it seems that this does not really bother Mahomes, who recently talked about it in an interview with Yahoo Sports Daily. He understood why it happened and accepted it. He said, “Yeah I mean you understand it. Coming off injury and we didn’t play as well as we wanted to the last few years. You’re gonna drop in the rankings of some sort. But at the same time, there’s a lot of good quarterbacks on that list and I’m just happy to be a part of it.”
He added, “You’ve got to go and prove it every single year, so it’s my job this year to prove why I can jump up in the list back to number one.” He also spoke about his goal for the next season.
Patrick Mahomes eyes Week 1 return
Ahead of the next season, Mahomes is recovering quite well. He has expressed his desire and goal to return from Week 1 itself. He said, “That’s my goal. I have said that since the beginning, is being ready to go Week 1. I can’t predict the future, and I know that it’s a long process. It’s not just my decision, but at the same time I’m going to give the doctors and the coaches every single opportunity I can to let me be out there Week 1.”
He added that he wanted to face off against the Denver Broncos, who became division champions for the first time in many years. The quarterback said, “I don’t want to miss that game because that’s the team that won the division while we were gone, and you want to be out there and ready to go with your teammates.”
Patrick Mahomes will focus on getting back to top form as the next season approaches.
