After an offseason of hemming and hawing, the New Orleans Saints and Alvin Kamara reached an agreement on a new contract this week that should allow Kamara to finish his career in New Orleans.
The details of that deal became clear Thursday morning via an NFL Media report: Kamara's new contract will pay him a base $6 million salary with a chance to earn $8.5 million with incentives. Kamara was set to play on the final year of a 2-year, $24 million extension he signed in 2024.
It puts an end to an offseason of drama surrounding Kamara and the Saints, after the organization repeatedly declined to say whether Kamara was part of their plans for 2026.
The deal ensured one of the most prolific players in franchise history sticks around. Now entering his 10th season in New Orleans, Kamara holds the franchise's all-time marks in rushing (7,250) and rushing touchdowns (61) as well as total touchdowns (87) and yards from scrimmage (12,198). He is one of nine active players with more than 12,000 career yards from scrimmage.
Kamara is coming off the worst season of his career. Injuries limited him to a career-low 11 games, but he also posted some of his worst per-game and per-touch figures in his career.
The Saints responded by signing the younger and more explosive Travis Etienne this offseason to lead their backfield. Kamara is expected to serve as the primary option behind Etienne.
