But amid the senior headlines, Liverpool quietly confirmed some academy news.
Midfielder Oliver O’Connor has signed his first professional contract at the AXA Training Centre ahead of the 2026‑27 season as confirmed by the club.
The 17‑year‑old Scouser has been on the club’s books since the age of six, progressing all the way through the pre‑Academy and Academy ranks. A creative midfielder by trade, O’Connor was a regular for the U18s last term and even showcased his versatility by filling in at right‑back for Simon Wiles’ side.
He also featured in the UEFA Youth League in 2025‑26 as Liverpool reached the knockout stages.
Known for his attacking instincts and eye for goal, O’Connor made his U18 debut while still an U16 and scored a memorable strike away at Newcastle United, with one of his efforts later being nominated for Liverpool’s Goal of the Season.
O’Connor is expected to join up with Rob Pages U21 side in the coming season, having recently signed for Roc Nation as his agency amid this new contract renewal.
It remains to be seen if the teenager is considered for Liverpool’s USA Tour later this month, with Andoni Iraola’s squad to leave on 20 July.
The Spaniard has promised that academy players will be given the chance to impress.
