Liverpool have an"outline agreement in place"to complete exciting deal with£60m superstar

Excellent news is emerging that Liverpool and Dominik Szoboszlai have taken a massive step towards agreeing a new contract for the Hungarian midfielder.

Last season was a failure, with Arne Slot paying the ultimate price by being sacked and replaced by former Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, who will be pleased to learn that Szoboszlai is nearing a new deal.

13 goals and 12 assists last season was the best contribution in an attacking sense for Szoboszlai since his £60m move from RB Leipzig in 2023. The 25-year-old is entering his prime, and Liverpool must get this deal over the line to prevent another top star leaving for the likes of Real Madrid.

Reports suggest Szoboszlai’s agreement is advancing

While the focus at the moment is on recruiting new talent to bolster the squad available to Iraola, the club cannot ignore contract renewals – particularly given that Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Robertson and Salah have all left for free in the last year.

According to James Pearce of The Athletic, Szoboszlai’s contract talks have been led by Richard Hughes, who will vacate his role as sporting director at the end of 2026.

Dominik Szoboszlai set to commit his future to Liverpool by penning a new long-term contract. Huge boost for new head coach Andoni Iraola.

Nothing signed yet but outline agreement in place with the Hungary international.

Pearce reports: “Dominik Szoboszlai is set to commit his future to Liverpool by signing a new long-term contract. There is an outline agreement in place with the Hungary international, following months of negotiations between sporting director Richard Hughes and his representatives.

“Retaining the services of Szoboszlai, who has two years remaining on his current deal, is a major boost for new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola and will end speculation over the player’s future.

Renewing Szoboszlai’s contract is as important as any transfer this summer

While Liverpool would do well to sign the likes of Bradley Barcola, it’s fair to argue that retaining Szoboszlai in the long-term is as important as any new signing this summer.

The 25-year-old was sensational last season, and now with Iraola in charge, he is only likely to be platformed for even greater success in the Liverpool midfield.

When asked about his future after April’s Merseyside derby triumph over Everton, Szoboszlai told journalists: “There has been no real progression, so I cannot say anything new about my contract situation.

“As you guys know, my contract ends in 2028, so I am ready to go every day, every week, and then let’s see. Of course I see myself here in the long term, but it is not really in my hands any more. I love being here. I love the fans. My family is happy.”
