NFL Analyst Reveals ‘The Key’ to Shedeur Sanders Winning Browns QB1 Race

Shedeur Sanders experienced one of the most talked-about NFL drafts in recent memory. Many analysts widely projected him to become a top five selection, but the Cleveland Browns selected him in the fifth round at No. 144 overall. However, the Colorado Buffaloes product somehow climbed to the top of the team’s quarterback ladder.

Cleveland started the 2025 season with Sanders buried in the depth chart. He played behind Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel before the franchise decided to hand the reins to Sanders’ fellow rookie. Gabriel started six games and appeared to have had a firm grip on the QB1 job. Things changed in Week 9 when he suffered a concussion.

Sanders started the Browns’ last seven games, going 3-4. He completed 120-of-212 passes for 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns. He is now battling Gabriel and the returning Deshaun Watson for the starting job.

NFL Analyst Shares How Shedeur Sanders Can Win Browns’ QB1 Role

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio published an article on Wednesday about Cleveland’s quarterback situation. He highlighted that Sanders has a chance to emerge on top of the pecking order if he puts ina lot of work.

“The test will be training camp,”Florio wrote. “Every day, every practice, every rep. Focus, effort, repeat. Along the way, Shedeur will become better prepared to perform when it’s time to do so. Watson will have a say in the process, too. If Shedeur does everything well, Watson will have to do it even better.

“But that’s the key. Full commitment to the process of learning, and executing (Cleveland head coach Todd) Monken’s offense.”

The Browns’training camp from July 31 to Aug. 12 will be Sanders’ chance to prove his worth. While the competition is expected to be tough, if he wins the battle, he should translate his offseason success to the NFL season.
