Liverpool owner John W. Henry has outlined his reasoning behind never speaking to local media outlets in the US — where he also controls the Boston Red Sox.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has come under fire for several high-profile decisions including the European Super League debacle across its tenure at Anfield, with similar issues at its other major team. But Henry has outlined his policy not to speak with journalists in Boston, despite owning the local paper, the Boston Globe, which he took over back in 2013.

"I felt it was important to step forward when the (Boston) Globe was for sale for the reasons you cited," Henry told Fangraphs earlier this year.

"Local news is key for a community — especially ours. I believe that more strongly than ever. It was hemorrhaging cash and shrinking. It needed a new set of strategies to survive.

"It took years of work with a great editor and Linda (Pizzutti, his wife) becoming CEO to turn things around. She has been passionate about the mission, about the business and is a terrific leader.

"To your question, I stopped speaking with local media about sports more than a decade ago with few exceptions. As you put it, I saw it as unproductive.

"Why? Because the Sox have a baseball chief, a CEO, a manager and a chairman speaking. There are plenty of front office voices every day.

"I know that local media are frustrated that once again I’m not taking questions from them, but I had a long, close relationship with Alex (Cora, the manager who was fired in April).

"I’m not going to discuss why these changes were made. It would be a disservice to Alex and others. This is a very emotional time for my family who loves Alex and his family.

"This is a tough business for families, and the Red Sox are a family. I made a statement thanking Alex for what he brought to the organization over the years."

Ultimately, fans only want to hear from the people behind the scenes when things are going wrong. As long as the team is winning, Henry — or whoever else — can afford to remain silent.

"I remember a plane flying overhead when we (Liverpool) were beating Manchester United 7-0 that read 'FSG OUT!'" Henry wrote in a message to the Sports Business Journal earlier this year.

"It doesn’t mean you ignore them, it means you work harder — you don’t settle for mediocrity. You have to win."
