AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A local flag football team is heading to the national stage after qualifying for the NFL Flag Football National Championship later this month.
East Georgia Blitz’s 12U boys team won a regional tournament in Dothan, Alabama, earning one of 32 spots in the country for their age group at the national tournament.
The event is scheduled for July 23-26 in Westfield, Indiana, just outside of Indianapolis.
The tournament will be televised by ESPN and is sponsored by the NFL and Toyota. It will be held during the NFL Hall of Fame Induction Ceremonies.
East Georgia Blitz is a nonprofit flag football league serving the CSRA. The organization participates in the NFL Flag Football Program, a worldwide league with an estimated 880,000 participants globally.
The league was co-founded by Bill Walker and CJ McCollum.
Flag football is growing in prominence — it is set to become an Olympic sport in 2028, and colleges and universities are beginning to offer scholarships in the sport.
Locally, Greenbrier High School’s girls flag football team has won three consecutive state championships, with several players having ties to East Georgia Blitz.
