What makes Baker Mayfield?
_The following is a brief summary of some scenes from the Netflix series “Quarterback,” a “Hard Knocks”-like look at NFL quarterbacks. Cameras tail them on and off the field. Joe Flacco, Cam Ward, Jayden Daniels and Mayfield are this summer’s featured quarterbacks._
Second episode begins with Mayfield sipping coffee on a boat deck outside his crib with his wife Emily and their daughter. Yeah, Mayfield said, he has a chip on his shoulder. It came from being doubted “so many times” dating back to his high school days at Lake Travis High School in Austin.
\* In looking back at his 2021 season that eventually doomed his days in Cleveland, Mayfield said, “I dislocated my shoulder. Looking back on it, I probably should have gotten surgery and sat out the year. But, as stubborn as I am, I wanted to play.”
Interesting words considering what transpired last season.
\* On a key first down rushing along the right sideline to help seal the Bucs’ win over Minnesota in Week 1 of the 2023 season, you see the Bucs sideline, led by Devin White, erupt at how Mayfield lowered his shoulder to get past the sticks. Tristan Wirfs said that play was significant. “I think from that point on, yeah, this is the guy we are going to follow.”
\* The episode then cuts to Mayfield running for a touchdown, leaping over Giants defenders at the goal line in 2024 with his voice in the background, “Tampa has just been home from the beginning.”
\* Later, Mayfield is shown arriving for a game at Houston last year, walking across the field wearing a Whitney Houston T-shirt.
\* Against Houston, the Texans are flagged for a face mask on Bucky Irving and Mayfield celebrates almost like the Bucs won a playoff game.
\* C.J. Gardner-Johnson steps across the line of scrimmage after a play to try to get in Mayfield’s face and Mayfield responds, “Who you talkin’ to? Shut your b!tch-@ss up.” Apparently, belt-to-@ss Gardner-Johnson had previously said how dangerous the Bucs would be if they had a quarterback.
It’s not nice to try to fool Mr. Mayfield.
