Liverpool are still “working on a solution” at right-back in the transfer window, knowing that they do not want to rely on Jeremie Frimpong as first choice there.
As it stands there has been little progress when it comes to strengthening at right-back this summer, despite the role being a major problem position last season.
With Conor Bradley out with a long-term knee injury and Frimpong struggling to meet the standards while suffering with his own fitness issues, Arne Slot was forced to make do.
That saw Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones fill in on a regular basis, which is a situation Liverpool are “determined” to avoid under Andoni Iraola.
Frimpong expected to be Liverpool “utility man”
On his YouTube channel, journalist David Lynch explained the pursuit of another right-back solution and emphasised that Liverpool “don’t want 50 games at right-back for Jeremie Frimpong.”
Instead, Frimpong is expected to take up the role of “utility man,” which many will feel is more appropriate for the versatile Dutchman.
“You don’t want him to play too many games at right-back,” Lynch said.
“You want him to be available to play up and down occasionally, sometimes coming on the right wing, etc. He’s kind of versatile and a utility man.
“So they don’t want to say ‘well, you’re the backup right-back, you play 35 games at right-back this season’.

“So they’re going to find solutions as I understand it.
“Now that might be, ‘OK, we don’t let Joe Gomez go, but we make him the dedicated backup rather than putting him in the centre-half rotation’ and then sign another centre-half, or get a right-back option who can play centre-half and those kind of things.
“So they are examining the market as I understand it, but they’re absolutely determined they won’t be putting Szoboszlai there, they won’t be putting Jones there.
“They don’t want 50 games at right-back for Jeremie Frimpong and they also want to be careful with Conor Bradley.”

There have been few concrete links with right-backs so far this summer, but Lynch has moved to ruled out moves for Girona’s Arnau Martinez and Rayo Vallecano’s Andrei Ratiu.
“They’re working on a solution there, but we just know it’s not going to be Arnau Martinez and it’s not going to be Andrei Ratiu,” he continued.
Frimpong made 35 appearances in his first campaign at Liverpool, with 25 of those as a right-back and the other 10 further forward in attack – however, he only averaged 51.3 minutes on the pitch per game in that time.
