If the Ravens really hope to upgrade their defense this year, getting Nnamdi Madubuike back on the field would go a long way. A two-time Pro Bowler, he suffered some type of injury last season about which Baltimore has been vague. At one point, it sounded career-threatening. In recent months, however, they have struck a much more positive tone.
“I think everything looks to be pointed in the right direction”, Ravens GM Eric DeCosta recently said about Madubuike, via the team’s website, “but you’re talking about a different type of injury, a different type of circumstance”.
“I’m excited about where Nnamdi is, and I think we’ll have more information in the coming weeks. In the next two weeks, I think we’ll have a lot more information that we’ll be able to share with people”.
A 2022 third-round pick, Nnamdi Madubuike (who entered the name using the first name Justin) blossomed into a star. He began starting in his second season and made his first Pro Bowl in Year 4. He also made the second-team All-Pro List that season, as well as the Pro Bowl in 2024.
Madubuike recorded two sacks in the Ravens’ first two games last season, but would not play again. The defense clearly felt it for the rest of the year. After some worries about his future, though, there is now optimism he will return to form.
Despite the uncertainty over Nnamdi Madubuike, the Ravens did not draft a defensive lineman until the seventh round. In fact, they had a very offense-heavy draft, adding only three defensive players. They did sign Calais Campbell and John Jenkins in free agency, however, returning Travis Jones and Broderick Washington, among others.
If the Ravens have Madubuike back along the defensive line, it could have a serious ripple effect around the rest of the unit. Especially if they can squeeze out one last competent season from Calais Campbell. Now in his umpteenth season, he recorded 6.5 sacks with 9 tackles for loss on 524 snaps just last season, so he can still be an impactful player.
Baltimore has an entirely new coaching staff, though, starting with Jesse Minter. Now the head coach, he earned his reputation as a defensive coordinator, mostly under Jim Harbaugh. Minter followed Harbaugh from Michigan to Los Angeles, and is now taking over John Harbaugh’s job that he held for 18 years. A job he lost, arguably, largely in part because of Nnamdi Madubuike’s injury and the impact it had in unraveling the defense as a whole.
