Jayden Danns is yet to join Liverpool’s first-team squad for pre-season with Andoni Iraola pointing to an injury. Here is the latest on the striker’s fitness.

Iraola hinted at a new blow for Danns when assessing the injury situation as Liverpool stepped up their pre-season work on Thursday.

Danns had been previously involved with ball work on the outdoor pitches as part of the U21s squad, with Iraola and his staff watching on at the AXA Training Centre last week.

This Is Anfield understands the 20-year-old has not suffered a new injury and he is simply being managed due to tightness in the hamstring he tore in September.

“Probably the worst news when we arrived is that we have, I would say, five players injured,” the head coach told LFCTV.

“Even Danns, who couldn’t start with us because he got injured with the U21s.”

It remains to be seen whether Danns will be cleared to fly with the first team for their pre-season tour of the United States, with Liverpool travelling on Monday.

With Hugo Ekitike sidelined with an Achilles injury and Alexander Isak yet to report back after the World Cup, the friendlies against Sunderland, Wrexham and Leeds will provided a valuable opportunity to the club’s young strikers.

If Danns is unable to take part – which is unclear at this stage – the likes of Will Wright and Josh Sonni-Lambie, both 18, can be expected to benefit.

Federico Chiesa is the most senior option in the role, with the Italian having trained consistently since the start of pre-season.

Iraola could gradually introduced both Isak and Cody Gakpo during the tour but Wright, Sonni-Lambie and others are likely to be rewarded with minutes in America.

Danns missed much of the 2024/25 campaign, including a half-season loan spell at Sunderland, and was also left out of Liverpool’s pre-season tour of Asia last summer.

He then tore his hamstring taking a free-kick for the U21s in September of last year before, in his first game back in six months, suffering a recurrence of the issue in March.

Having worked his way back to full fitness for the start of pre-season, this could serve as another setback for the Scouser, who has not played regularly since the 2023/24 campaign.

Speaking to The Athletic last month, Liverpool academy director Alex Inglethorpe said: “His body has gone through a tremendous amount of growth over the past year or so.

“Previously, it was a stress-related problem [in his back] and this season, it was hamstring. He’s put on a few kilos of muscle. He’s grown and looks like a man now.”
