Newcastle make contact to sign 'the next Declan Rice' to replace Bruno Guimaraes - report

Newcastle United are having another tough transfer window, but Eddie Howe is working hard to rebuild the squad and make them competitive once again.

The Magpies have brought in Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure and Seun Steur so far in this window, but have sold Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali, while captain Bruno Guimaraes has told the board that he wants to leave to join Arsenal, amid strong interest from the Premier League champions.

That has left Newcastle looking in the market for midfield options to strengthen the team, despite their wish to keep the Brazilian, and they have now made their move for a new target.

Newcastle Make Move for Hugo Larsson

Hugo Larsson in action for Eintracht Frankfurt

According to a report by Football Transfers, Newcastle have now made contact to sign Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Larsson this summer.

Larsson, who has been described as 'the next Declan Rice', enjoyed a fine season with Frankfurt in 2025/26 but was surprisingly left out of the Sweden squad for the World Cup by Graham Potter, as they crashed out of the tournament in the Round of 32 against France.

The 22-year-old midfielder has attracted the attention of a number of clubs with his performances, and Newcastle are now pushing to get ahead of the queue to get a deal done.

Newcastle have already made contact with the player's representatives about taking him to St James' Park, and it has been established that he would be very open to a move to the Premier League.

Frankfurt are understood to value the midfielder at €50m (£42.5m), and Newcastle believe that while Larsson is not yet the finished product, he could help to fill the gap left by Guimaraes should he depart, while he could also step into the Tonali-shaped hole in their midfield.

Newcastle Must Move Quickly

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe looks on

Newcastle have been very good at identifying targets in the market in recent years, but they have often struggled to get deals over the line which has hurt them greatly.

They have already missed out on two targets this summer with Liverpool and Aston Villa hijacking their deals for Victor Munoz and Johan Manzambi despite agreements being in place, and the club must now learn from their mistakes and get deals over the line.

Larsson would be a terrific signing who has great potential to improve in the coming years, and with Guimaraes' future very much up in the air, this is one to watch in the coming weeks.
