Newcastle United are keen on Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford for the third consecutive season.
James Trafford faces a huge few weeks as he decides whether to stay at Manchester City or seek first-team football elsewhere.
The 23-year-old was an unused substitute throughout the World Cup, with Jordan Pickford given the nod between the sticks. England ultimately crashed out in disappointing fashion to Argentina on Wednesday.
Despite taking a 1-0 lead through Anthony Gordon on 55 minutes, the Three Lions sat back and allowed Lionel Messi and Co to take charge. As for Trafford, he could be a contender to feature as England take on France in the third-place play-off.
Newcastle United interest
Newcastle like Trafford - that much is clear. They have targeted the 23-year-old for three consecutive summers and came within a whisker of signing him 12 months ago.
It was previously understood that Newcastle viewed the move to be a non-starter. But the consensus has shifted despite signing Ewen Jaouen last month.
Trafford is keen to explore a potential exit if he can secure first-team football. The goalkeeper publicly opened up about his frustrations this season after a 2-0 win over Salford City in February.
While Newcastle want Trafford, a problem could arise over his wages. He would likely need to take a slight hit on his £100,000 per week pay packet at Man City.
James Trafford to make decision
As many as four Premier League clubs are interested in Trafford. The keeper was open to joining Newcastle last year before City hijacked the deal at the death.
Aston Villa, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United are thought to be keeping tabs on the situation. The messaging from his camp has always been clear that he will make a decision after the World Cup.
England head home early next week - placing Trafford in the “one to watch” category. Man City are thought to value the Three Lions at around £40million.
