Steven Gerrard has got his wish now that Dominik Szoboszlai has signed a new contract - and the Liverpool legend has tipped him to follow in his footsteps and become the club’s captain.

Szoboszlai looks to have ended any speculation over his future after agreeing a new deal with Liverpool that will keep him at Anfield until 2031. The midfielder is understood to have signed his new contract after returning to training ahead of the 2026/27 season this week.

A new deal for the Hungary international has been one of Liverpool’s priorities in recent months, with talks having resumed recently after Szoboszlai had indicated back in April that no progress had been made.

The 25-year-old’s decision to sign a new deal is a big boost for Liverpool. Szoboszlai has become a key player for the club after joining from RB Leipzig in 2023, going on to play a big role in the Premier League title triumph in 2024/25.

Although the following campaign saw the Reds suffer a huge drop-off, Szoboszlai’s reputation actually grew as he became the standout performer in the team, going on to be voted the club’s player of the season.

His all-action displays have earned him the ultimate compliment of being compared with Gerrard, who was recently voted as the club’s greatest ever player, and the man himself will be delighted to see Szoboszlai sign his new deal after tipping him to take over as captain in the future.

"I like his mentality. He's evolved and he's grown a lot since he's become a Liverpool player," Gerrard told TNT Sports back in March. "We [Liverpool] obviously signed a big talent.

"He's in the prime years of his career. I think Liverpool are going to see the best of him. I hope he stays around for a long time because I think there's a potential captain in there.”

Szoboszlai has proved to be a dependable presence for Liverpool, having even filled in at right-back on a number of occasions last season - although Gerrard wants to see him stay put in midfield now.

"He's definitely a team player,” Gerrard added. “I still think there's another level to him as well. I can see him potentially getting more goals, if he can have a consistent run in that 8/10 position.

"He's always in and around the box. His ball striking is phenomenal. His timing and his technique and he hits it with so much venom. The balls are getting lighter and lighter. He must be an absolute nightmare for the goalkeeper.

"People are going away now talking about his performance because he's exciting and he's entertaining, but he's in his proper position. Keep him in his proper position. Let him flourish."
