After a stellar season that saw the San Antonio Spurs returning to the NBA Finals, the Texas team have made some moves as they round out their roster, yet one question remains.
Following a rather poor performance by De'Aaron Fox in their playoff run and terrific outings by rookie guard Dylan Harper, many questioned whether the 20-year-old should replace Fox on the starting lineup next season.
Jared Weiss of The Athletic reveals the roster status of guards Dylan Harper and De'Aaron Fox after Harper seemed to have outplayed the experienced guard in their Finals run.
"The Spurs have downplayed Fox's playoff struggles as a product of playing through an ankle injury and maintain that his real issue was his inability to convert a lot of good looks," Weiss wrote.
"There is also an understanding that Fox is not tradeable on his contract at the moment, and rehabbing his value with a good playoff performance next season will be crucial to an inevitable backcourt succession plan."
As San Antonio seem to believe in Fox returning to form next season, the reporter reveals Harper's position on his role:
"Harper has expressed a willingness to be patient and accept a sixth man role again next season as he continues to get a feel for how to run an offense full-time."
Based on this information it seems that the Spurs will have the same starting guard rotation next season.
Spurs making moves in the offseason
The San Antonio Spurs have been active this offseason, adding veteran forward Tobias Harris while securing the long-term futures of several key players.
Most notably, the franchise signed superstar Victor Wembanyama to a five-year, $252 million maximum rookie-scale extension.
Wembanyama opted for the standard 25% maximum salary rather than pursuing the 30% supermax escalators, which could have increased the total value of the contract to approximately $303 million.
He and the Spurs reportedly explored several different contract structures before finalizing the deal.
Keldon Johnson is also eligible for an extension this summer, although it appears unlikely that the Spurs will offer him one.
He remains an important locker-room leader and a valuable member of the rotation, but San Antonio’s growing depth and competition on the wing have created uncertainty surrounding his long-term future.
