As Prince Harry arrived at the Time100 Sports Gala in New York City last night, Page Six asked him if he was sad about England losing to Argentina in the World Cup semifinals. Harry replied, “of course.”
His comments follow other reactions from the British royal family to the defeat: Prince William wrote on social media that he was “gutted” but that the team should “hold their heads high” and King Charles joked yesterday that it was a “good day to drown a few sorrows” after sampling local beers in Dorset.
No member of the British royal went to the World Cup this year, though there’s still the third-place game between England and France tomorrow. The Duke of Sussex previously went to a World Cup game in 2014, during a visit to Brazil.

The last major sporting event Harry attended was recent, though; the Duke of Sussex was at game 5 of the NBA finals. He watched the Knicks win the championship while seated next to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. Last night, Prince Harry met Knicks star Jalen Brunson at the Time 100 event. (Still no word on if Harry is a Knicks fan.)

Despite Harry posing for a photograph with a member of the U.S. men’s team, the Sussexes were likely rooting for England. On Father’s Day, Meghan Markle shared a photo of Harry hugging their children; Prince Archie is in an England t-shirt.
The family just got back from a trip to the UK, where they met with King Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House. It had been four years since the King had seen his youngest grandchildren; the last time they spent time together was in 2022, when the Sussexes came to the UK for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee. Last night marks Prince Harry’s first appearance following the family reunion.
