Curtis Jones has become one of the biggest names in Liverpool transfer news. Inter Milan remain interested in the academy graduate, but the Reds have now made their position very clear as the summer transfer window continues.
Liverpool stand firm over Curtis Jones
As reported by talkSPORT, Inter Milan have made more than one attempt to sign Jones this summer. Their latest approach was worth around £27M, but Liverpool rejected it without opening negotiations. The Merseyside club believe the offer still falls below the midfielder’s true value.
The Reds are reportedly asking for at least £30M, while some reports suggest their valuation could be even higher because of growing interest from other clubs. As reported by Yahoo Sports, Liverpool have no intention of accepting a lower offer simply because Jones has entered the final year of his contract.
The club would rather keep the England international than sell him for less than they believe he is worth. That shows how highly they still rate the midfielder despite all the transfer rumours. Jones came through the academy and has been part of the senior team for several years. His versatility and work rate continue to make him a useful player inside the squad.
Curtis Jones’ stats for Liverpool this season, as per FOTMOB:
Competitions Matches Goals Assists Passing Accuracy (%)
Premier League 34 1 2 91%
FA Cup 4 2 1 95%
EFL Cup 1 0 0 94%
Champions League 9 0 0 94%
New manager wants Curtis Jones to stay
As reported by Sports Illustrated, new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola wants Jones to remain at Anfield. The report says the Spanish coach values not only his ability with the football, but also his connection with the club and the city.Iraola reportedly believes having homegrown players is important for the team’s identity. Jones is now one of the few local academy graduates left in the first-team squad, making his role even more valuable.
Last season was not easy for the midfielder. He found regular starts difficult and often came off the bench. Even so, Liverpool still believe he has plenty to offer under the new coaching staff. Jones’ future remains open because his current contract expires next summer. However, Liverpool are still prepared to discuss a new deal if both sides reach an agreement.
Inter still interested but deal remains difficult
Inter continue to admire Jones and believe he could strengthen their midfield. The Serie A side are expected to keep monitoring the situation, but Liverpool’s firm stance has made negotiations difficult.Every rejected offer increases the challenge for the Italian club. Unless they return with a much improved bid, there appears to be little chance of an agreement.
For now, Jones remains focused on pre-season. He could still become an important player under Iraola if he stays at Anfield for the new campaign. The Premier League side knows that replacing an experienced homegrown midfielder would not be easy. That is another reason why they are refusing to lower their asking price. The transfer window still has plenty of time left, but the next move now belongs to Inter. Whether they decide to increase their offer could decide how this story ends.
Author’s Opinion
Jones still has plenty of quality, and Liverpool’s stance makes sense. Selling a homegrown player below his value would offer little benefit. If no suitable bid arrives, staying and earning a bigger role under Iraola could be the best outcome for everyone.
