The New England Patriots enter the 2026 NFL season as one of the top contenders to win the Super Bowl, and with it, a lot of attention and notable matchups.
After a 2025 season that saw Mike Vrabel's team go 14-3 in the regular season, win the AFC East and make it all the way to Super Bowl 60, New England's schedule in 2026 features some difficult opponents. The Patriots will face the Seahawks in the first game of the season in a Super Bowl rematch, along with all three AFC first-place teams in the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Denver Broncos.
However, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Patriots are ready for the road ahead after some major offseason acquisitions.
Patriots 'loaded up' for 2026 season
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport said that while things are going to get harder for the Patriots, including playing a first-place schedule, New England has "loaded up in a way that's interesting and very, very recognizable."

"The Patriots, for a team that went to the Super Bowl and has a really young core, acted how every fan would hope you would act when you have a young quarterback on a cheap contract," Rapoport said. "They were really, really aggressive ... they went and got AJ Brown, certainly one of the most high-profile additions we've seen this offseason. You mention Romeo Doubs, Alijah Vera-Tucker on the offensive line, added some pieces on defense as well."
Rapoport went on to say that New England is not satisfied with just making the Super Bowl, and with the 2026 schedule, the Patriots will have earned it.
Patriots offseason acquisitions 2026
The AFC champions did the opposite of sitting on its current roster entering the 2026 season, making plenty of offseason moves to bolster the team on both sides of the ball.
The most noticeable change is in the wide receiver room, where the Patriots acquired Brown, one of the premium receivers in the NFL with six 1,000+ yard campaigns in seven seasons. Then, New England added a high-profile WR2 in Romeo Doubs, who comes over from Green Bay on a four-year, near-$78 million contract. In his final year with Green Bay, Doubs set a career-high with 724 receiving yards.
On the offensive line, the Patriots added guard Alijah Vera-Tucker from the division rival Jets. When healthy, Vera-Tucker has proven to be a legit, high-end, and incredibly versatile offensive lineman. Prior to missing the entire 2025 season with a triceps injury, he put together an outstanding 2024 campaign with the Jets, starting 15 games and ranking ninth among all NFL guards with a 77.7 PFF grade.
The Patriots spent big to upgrade their offense this off-season. The run game and pass pro should be vastly improved.

Then on defense, the Patriots focused their additions on veteran stability and proven production, anchoring their upgrades with the signings of Dre'Mont Jones and Kevin Byard. Jones, coming off a career-best 7.0-sack campaign split between the Titans and Ravens, was signed to a three-year, $39.5 million contract to provide a consistent, versatile pass rush along the defensive front.
To secure the back end, New England brought in elite veteran safety Kevin Byard on a one-year, $9 million deal. Byard is coming off an outstanding year, leading the NFL with seven interceptions for the Bears, bringing much-needed turnover-generating capability and high-IQ leadership to a secondary that is also adding depth pieces like linebacker/safety Mike Brown and cornerback Kindle Vildor.
