Newcastle United can land 'clear upgrade' with shock move for Man City star

Newcastle United are hoping to add more new faces to their squad during the remainder of the summer transfer window.

Newcastle United have been told they can upgrade their options in one key position within their squad by making a big money move for a Manchester City star.

The Magpies have added three new faces to their squad since a disappointing season came to a close in May after completing deals for Reims and France Under-21 goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, Hoffenheim winger Bazoumana Traore and Ajax’s highly-rated midfielder Sean Steur. However, there is a lot of work still to do before the summer transfer window comes to a close in early-September and United are believed to be keen to add a goalkeeper, full-back, midfielder and a winger to their ranks.

There have been links with several players from across the Premier League and around Europe - and some reports have suggested Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush is under consideration. The Egypt international joined City in a reported £65m move during January transfer window in 2025 after impressing in the colours of Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt. Marmoush has gone on to score 16 goals and provide six assists in 61 appearances in all competitions - but he made just 16 starts in all competitions last season and TeamTalk have reported the versatile forward is set for ‘key talks’ with City amid ‘growing interest from England and Germany’. Newcastle and Tottenham Hotspur are suggested as two possible suitors for his services and are said to have made enquiries over a deal - although Marmoush is also said to be keen to discuss where he sits in Enzo Marseca’s plans after he was named as successor to Pep Guardiola.

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown believes Marmoush would provide a ‘clear upgrade’ for the Magpies if they were to push for a deal.

He told Football Insider: "Omar Marmoush at his best is a real top-class player. He showed that when he first came in at Man City, he looked quick, confident, strong, good in front of goal, he scored plenty and looked like he would be excellent for them. In the last season, he hasn't had that same impact at City, he hasn't been called upon as often and there are players ahead of him in the pecking order.

"But for somebody like Newcastle, he would be a clear upgrade on what they've already got in positions where they need to strengthen. Losing Anthony Gordon means they will need a new left-winger, and he can play through the middle as well which is another area where they're not entirely happy. Marmoush, if Newcastle can get the best out of him as I'm sure they will believe they can, would be an excellent addition to that squad.

"At his best, he's certainly an upgrade on what they've already got, it's just about getting that best out of him because he hasn't been able to show that at Man City recently. Whatever the reason for that may be, whether it's his confidence or players ahead of him in the pecking order, a move to Newcastle could be ideal to kickstart things for him."
