Liverpool have officially confirmed that Dominik Szoboszlai has signed a new contract at Anfield, cementing the Hungary international’s status as a cornerstone of the club’s future.
The deal formalises months of negotiations and reports, with Liverpool finally moving from outline agreement to his signature on the dotted line.
His importance, plus growing interest from Europe’s elite – including Real Madrid – meant Liverpool simply could not afford to let his situation drift.
Speaking on the extension, he said:
“It’s maybe my biggest day.”
“There are a couple in front of it – probably when I signed for Liverpool the first one and when I got my baby, of course. But in my football career, I can say this is in the top three.”
“Very happy. [I] can’t wait to go again and again and again. I’m just happy to be here, as I said many times.”
While Liverpool state that it’s simply a long-term contract, reports assert that the Hungarian has penned a five-year extension at the club.
The Liverpool No.8 added that the Champions League trophy is a goal he wants to achieve next:
“There’s always more to come. I’m never happy.”
“No, I’m happy with myself but I think I can do even better. I think that’s why I’m sitting here, because that pushed me since I was a kid: that it was never enough. And I’m thinking the same now.”
“I want to set the example. I want to be an example also for everyone, as much as I can.”
“When I signed, I said I want to win everything. That didn’t change for a little moment either. It stayed the same: I want to win everything that is possible in this country, also let’s say the Champions League.”
“I’m ready to go for it.”
Szoboszlai is a candidate to fill the vice-captain role alongside Alisson Becker, Joe Gomez, and Alexis Mac Allister.
It would be easy to imagine that the Liverpool No.8 got assurances over leadership positions over the course of his deal at Anfield in the next few seasons.
It likewise avoids the situation of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free transfer exit and Ibrahima Konate following the same path to Real Madrid.
The Spanish giants had been sniffing around the Hungary captain and it avoids the club setting a dangerously and ultimately embarrassing precedent.
Szoboszlai arrived at Liverpool in the summer of 2023 for a fee of £60 million when the club triggered his release clause at RB Leipzig. He signed a five-year contract at the time, tying him to the club until June 2028.
He has been on that deal since then but has now no doubt been rewarded with a significant pay boost.
