Kaishu Sano caught the eye during Japan's admirable performance, which ended with a Round of 32 defeat to Brazil. He put in excellent performances that earned praise and seemingly interest from top European clubs.
According to TEAMtalk, Liverpool are leading the race to sign Sano and are willing to offer up to £51 million (€60 million) for the defensive midfielder. They have held talks over a deal to sign the 25-year-old, although they face competition.
Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund are also eyeing the Japanese star and have contacted his representatives. A move to the Premier League feels like a real possibility, given that Brentford, Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United showed interest earlier in the window.
Liverpool's potential bid for Sano would be a club-record sale for Mainz, and it's a price that the Bundesliga club are thought to value the player at. He is a workhorse who enjoyed a fine past season with the Germans, posting two goals and five assists in 48 games across competitions.
