Dominik Szoboszlai’s new long‑term contract at Liverpool has been well received by the fanbase, but also seemingly grom from transfer target Nico Schlotterbeck.
Liverpool confirmed that Szoboszlai has signed a fresh long‑term deal ahead of the 2026‑27 season, extending his stay into what will be his fourth campaign at Anfield.
The Hungary international, now 25, described the extension as “maybe my biggest day” in football and reiterated his ambition to “win everything” with the Reds, including the Champions League.
Since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2023, Szoboszlai has made 147 appearances and scored 28 goals.
He played his part in the 2024‑25 Premier League title win, before posting 13 goals and 12 assists last season to earn the Standard Chartered Player of the Season award.
In the wake of the announcement, Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck appeared in the comments under Liverpool’s post about Szoboszlai’s new deal, replying with a gif of Dominik Szoboszlai’s celebrating at Anfield following his world-class freekick against Arsenal last term.
The Hungarian liked the comment.
The interaction will only fuel speculation around the centre‑back, who has already been linked with a move to Anfield and whose representatives have visited the AXA Training Centre in the past as we exclusively revealed.
The 26‑year‑old recently extended his Borussia Dortmund contract until 2031, with an exit clause worth between €50‑60 million – available to a small group of clubs including Liverpool and Real Madrid – that expired on Wednesday, July 15.
That means any potential move now depends on fresh negotiations with Dortmund rather than a straightforward activation of a release clause.
On top of that, Schlotterbeck is currently sidelined by a torn ligament in his left ankle, sustained during Germany’s 2‑1 win over Ivory Coast at the 2026 World Cup, ruling him out of the rest of the tournament and leaving him out for around two months.
Dortmund expect him back in the autumn, but Liverpool must decide whether to pursue an injured defender whose easiest route out of Germany has just closed.
