‘He had a knock’ – Luis de la Fuente offers Lamine Yamal fitness update ahead of World Cup final

Spain boss Luis de la Fuente has offered a fitness update on Barcelona star Lamine Yamal ahead of Sunday’s World Cup final between his side and Argentina.

De la Fuente says he skipped training as a precautionary measure but is in good shape for the clash against Lionel Messi and Co.

> “He had a knock from the last game, yes, it was a blow in the penalty play. As a precaution, for safety, for peace of mind for him and above all because he had a slight discomfort that prevented him from training with total normality, we preferred that he do another type of work,” he told Sport.

Yamal was back training as normal on Friday and De la Fuente says the teenager is eager to show his best in New York in the final.

> “I expect more from everyone, not only from him, it is not a reproach, come on, it would be more than that. I’m very delighted with Lamine’s performance, but like everyone else, and it’s a maxim that we have in this group, is that every day we want to be better.

> “Lamine has exceptional footballing potential with a growth and a limit that nobody sees now and that is why he is the first one who wants, who demands more every day.”

Spain are hoping to be crowned world champions for a second time on Sunday, while Argentina are going for back-to-back titles following their victory in 2022.
