The two-time NBA MVP is set to begin the 14th season of his career wearing the No. 7 jersey in Miami after spending his entire NBA career with the Milwaukee Bucks.
Giannis' brother and longtime Bucks teammate, Thanasis Antetokounmpo, opened up about the blockbuster trade during an episode of the Thanalysis podcast.
Thanasis revealed that he was not informed beforehand that Giannis was being traded to Miami and admitted that he is still adjusting to the reality of seeing his brother leave Milwaukee.
"The crazy part is, I didn't know. I didn't know," Thanasis said. "That's his business, and that's what he wants to do.
"In terms of my reaction, I'm still adjusting. Bro, it's hard."
Thanasis described the move as both painful and exciting, acknowledging the mixed emotions surrounding such a major change.
"It's hard and exciting at the same time," he added. "And whoever says it's not, then you're not human."
Heat not expected to sign Giannis' brothers
During Giannis' time in Milwaukee, the Bucks made several moves to keep their franchise superstar comfortable, including adding Thanasis and Alex Antetokounmpo to the organization.
However, according to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne, Miami is not expected to follow the same path.
"There won't be any more Antetokounmpo brothers in Miami," Shelburne said on ESPN LA. "That whole 'we have Kostas and Thanasis on the team,' I don't think that's going to continue, from what I understand."
Thanasis Antetokounmpo, Giannis' older brother, spent seven seasons with the Bucks and became a familiar presence next to the two-time NBA MVP.
Although his on-court role was limited, Giannis has often spoken about how important Thanasis' presence was for him personally in Milwaukee.
With Thanasis on the roster, the Bucks won the 2021 NBA championship.
Across his Milwaukee stint, Thanasis appeared in 230 games, averaging 2.3 points and 1.5 rebounds.
This past season, the Bucks also added Giannis' youngest brother, Alex Antetokounmpo.
Alex appeared in six games for Milwaukee, averaging 3.2 points and 1.0 rebounds, but spent most of the season with the Bucks' G League affiliate.
