In honor of the San Francisco 49ers celebrating their 80th anniversary, Sactown Sports is kicking off a countdown of the 80 greatest moments in the franchise’s illustrious history in reverse order called “Faithful Flashbacks.”
From Super Bowl-winning plays to overperforming teams that had minimal expectations, there’s plenty to choose from the team with five titles under its belt.
The voting was conducted by a handful of the Sactown Sports’ staffers before results were compiled into a full list that will count down to the 49ers’ 2026 NFL regular season debut against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on September 10th.

Coming in at No. 39 on our ‘Faithful Flashbacks’ countdown of the 80 best moments in franchise history is Bill Walsh announcing his retirement after winning his third Super Bowl with the 49ers.
Walsh leaving when he did is part of what makes the timing so interesting. The 49ers were not fading out or trying to restart. They had just beaten the Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII, with Joe Montana leading the late drive and John Taylor catching the touchdown that gave San Francisco another championship. Walsh had reached the top of the sport again, then chose to walk away from the sideline.
By that point, his impact on the franchise was already impossible to separate from 49ers history. Walsh took over in 1979, when San Francisco was nowhere close to being viewed as one of the NFL’s model organizations. Within a few years, the 49ers had their first Super Bowl title. By the time he retired, they had three, along with a standard that would continue beyond his final game.
The offense, the quarterback development, the way the organization evaluated players and the overall confidence of the franchise all became tied to Walsh’s vision. Joe Montana turned into one of the greatest quarterbacks ever under his watch. Jerry Rice became a centerpiece of the next phase. Ronnie Lott, Roger Craig, Dwight Clark and so many others helped build the identity of a team that became the class of the 1980s.
His retirement did not immediately end the run, which says a lot about what had already been built. George Seifert took over and the 49ers won the Super Bowl again the next season, making it clear that Walsh had left behind more than memories. He had helped create a structure that could keep winning without him.
From a franchise-history perspective, Walsh stepping away was the closing of the original dynasty chapter. The 49ers still had more winning ahead, but the coach who changed everything had decided his sideline work was done.
