NEW YORK (WNDU) - Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said he expects running back Aneyas Williams to take on a starting role this season as the Irish replace two backs now in the NFL.
The Irish lost Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price to the NFL, leaving a significant number of carries and production available heading into the season.
Freeman spoke to reporters during media rounds in New York and said Williams, who has been in the program for three years, is positioned to be the featured back.
“I think of a guy named Aneyas Williams, who’s been in our program for three years and has made some big plays for our team, but hasn’t been a starting running back,” Freeman said. “And he’s going to get a chance to be that guy.”
Freeman also pointed to the offensive line as a foundation for the backfield’s success.
“We have a special quarterback in CJ Carr, but we have some talented individuals that maybe the nation doesn’t know because they haven’t had a chance to do it on the field yet,” Freeman said. “And we have a deep running back room, but it all starts with the big guys up front.”
Notre Dame opens the season on Sunday, Sept. 6, against Wisconsin at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.
