Notre Dame Fighting Irish Marcus Freeman was one of the most intriguing coach over the last six months. After the program failed to be selected to the College Football Playoff, they decided to opt out of their bowl game and Freeman flirted with an exit from the program and leaping to the NFL. He would wind up remaining with the Fighting Irish for the 2026 season, but he recently discussed the reasoning behind it. While appearing on ESPN’s Get Up on Friday, Notre Dame Fighting Irish coach Marcus Freeman discussed why he decided to return when there was serious NFL interest in his services this offseason.
“I mean, for me, you have to make a decision that’s best for you and your family. For us, there was no other option. For me, selfishly, it’s the opportunity to be around some of the greatest young people in the world. Yeah, they’re great football players, but they’re great people. To see them succeed and excel is something that I aspire to continue to do. I’m grateful for it. I alwaus say, when you’re not grateful for something, you’re going to lose it. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be around these guys and in this program right now and for years to come.”
Marcus Freeman would get an “enhanced” contract in December, keeping him under contract and making him one of the highest-paid college football coaches in the country. He has built a consistent winning program, holding a 43-12 record in his five years at South Bend. The Fighting Irish were able to bounce back and have one of the top transfer rankings in the country this offseason to improve the team for the 2026 college football season. It will be intriguing to see if Marcus Freeman remains with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish throughout the length of this current contract or if he jumps for a specific NFL coaching job.
