The Washington Wizards aren’t typically in the business of adding proven NBA legends to their roster, but their trajectory has been on the upswing lately following the trades for Trae Young and Anthony Davis. By the looks of things, the Wizards will be a lower-level playoff team this season, but that could change if they are able to make a surprise addition.
In a recent chat with one Wizards fan, Davis himself sparked some chatter when he revealed his “conversations” with LeBron James about potentially reuniting in the nation’s capital. He didn’t elaborate on their conversations, but he also didn’t deny that the Wizards had a chance.
“Maybe,” said Davis on LeBron James to D.C. “We’ve had some conversations.”
Davis and James played together for seven seasons on the Lakers, and they are widely considered one of basketball’s best duos. In 2020, they led Los Angeles to their first championship in a decade, forever cementing their place in franchise history. James and Davis became friends during this stint, and the relationship remains active today.
In February of 2025, however, Davis was sent to Dallas as part of the Luka Doncic trade, splitting up the two co-stars without so much as a warning. It was a shocking moment, and it’s been downhill for Davis ever since, who has struggled to stay on the court due to various injuries. Now, as a Wizard, AD has a chance for another fresh start, and he wants to make the most of it by any means necessary.
Even at 41, LeBron would be a great addition for the Wizards, and he’d help in more ways than one. By mentoring young guys like Alex Sarr, AJ Dybantsa, Kyshawn George, and Bilal Coulibaly, he could bring out their best and expedite their development without getting in the way or disrupting their natural progression. Plus, being in the East Conference and reunited with Davis, LeBron may put the Wizards into serious playoff contention, with enough juice to potentially make a lasting run.
Comparatively, the situation would be similar to when Michael Jordan joined the Wizards in the early 2000s. While it was far from his best days on the court, they still gave us tons of great moments, and it put the spotlight on the Wizards in a way they’d never experienced before. The difference in this case is that the Wizards are a much better team now than they were back then (at least, on paper).
But while LeBron’s addition alone might move D.C. up a tier, they shouldn’t hold their breath on welcoming the four-time champion. With his standards set high, the Wizards are likely not good enough or experienced enough for LeBron to really consider them as his next team. While Anthony Davis certainly helps their odds, the chances are that King James will sign with either the Cavaliers, Heat, 76ers, or Warriors. Unless the Wizards can pull off a miracle, they won’t be a part of the conversation, but they probably weren’t expecting it anyway after finishing 17-65 last season.
