Liverpool legend Steve Nicol says the Reds have done nowhere near enough in the transfer market so far this summer, with pre-season now having begun.

Andoni Iraola's side has signed center-back Jeremy Jacquet and left winger Victor Munoz, but with only 36 days to go until the trip to Newcastle that kicks off the new Premier League campaign for Liverpool, more additions are still required to bolster the ranks.

Sporting director Richard Hughes is working on signing another winger, Iraola confirmed this week, while Dominik Szoboszlai has penned a new long-term contract. As things stand, however, the roster is looking light.

"I'm absolutely shocked," Nicol told ESPN FC. "Pre-season has already started. "They’ve already let more go again this year than they’ve brought in.

"They’ve brought in a young defender who’s as raw as the day is long. Victor Munoz is a head-scratcher, and that’s it? I don’t know what to say.

"The whole rumor thing — even with the rumors, we’re only talking about two players. I’m sorry, I’m completely befuddled here. I’ve no idea what’s going on.

"Absolutely, 100 percent, they should have more signings by now, and the longer it goes without any [more], it just tells you they’re going to end up gambling when they shouldn’t be.

"They’ve just spent £100M on two players that we don’t know whether they’ll be starting if they had a game tomorrow.

"They need five or six. I tell you what, I hope the bank balance is in good shape, because it’ll have to be."

Adding another winger will be vital, while there is potentially a need to sign a right-back as well, with Conor Bradley still working his way back from injury and Jeremie Frimpong yet to convince.

There has been plenty of speculation surrounding a possible midfield signing, with the likes of Ayyoub Bouaddi and Adam Wharton both linked, but if Curtis Jones stays, that may not be a priority.

With another 45 days left to conclude more transfer deals, though, there is still time. The window will slam shut on September 1, with the World Cup only coming to an end this weekend.

Liverpool.com says: The Reds are well aware that they need more signings. Work is going on behind the scenes. As ever, the time to judge a transfer window is at the end, with a few weeks remaining to get more moves over the line.
