Los Angeles has strengthened much of its roster in recent seasons, yet uncertainty along the interior offensive line continues to generate questions. While the Chargers possess talent at several key positions, the guard unit lacks the proven consistency found elsewhere on the roster. The importance of the guard position extends far beyond protecting the quarterback. Interior linemen are responsible for maintaining a clean pocket against powerful defensive tackles while creating running lanes between the tackles. Any breakdown in the middle of the line can quickly disrupt offensive timing, forcing quarterbacks to deal with pressure before passing plays have an opportunity to develop.
The Chargers also hope to establish a balanced offensive attack capable of controlling games through both the air and on the ground. Consistent play from the guards will be essential in achieving that goal, particularly against division opponents known for aggressive defensive fronts. Improved interior blocking could help the offense sustain longer drives while giving the skill position players greater opportunities to produce explosive plays.

Biggest weakness: Guard. The return of Slater and Alt is especially important, considering Los Angeles’ underwhelming guard situation. The team moved on from both of last season’s starters, Zion Johnson and Mekhi Becton, and will look to free agent Cole Strange and second-round rookie Jake Slaughter to fill their spots. Trevor Penning and Kayode Awosika provide veteran fallback options. Strange, Penning and Awosika have played primarily as reserves in recent seasons.
Despite the concerns, there is reason to believe the position can improve as the season progresses. Competition during training camp is expected to determine the starting combination, while the coaching staff continues working to develop chemistry across the offensive line. If the group adapts quickly and establishes consistency, the perceived weakness could become far less significant by the time the regular season reaches its midpoint.
The Chargers possess enough talent to compete with the AFC’s top contenders, but maximizing their offensive potential will require dependable play from the interior offensive line. If the guard position develops into a reliable unit, Los Angeles could remove one of the few remaining obstacles standing between the franchise and a legitimate push toward championship contention during the 2026 season.
