Rob Gronkowski became one of the most productive tight ends in NFL history, but his introduction to the New England Patriots almost derailed the entire partnership before it ever really began.
Bill Belichick revisited the story recently, describing a pre-draft visit so bad that several coaches wanted nothing to do with Gronkowski.

Belichick described the visit in blunt terms on the latest episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, recalling how Gronkowski’s trip to Foxborough nearly cost him a spot on the roster entirely.

“When he came in on his 30-30 visit, he fell asleep,” Belichick said. “It was a terrible visit, one of the worst we ever had.”
He added that the reaction inside the building was almost unanimous. “Several of our coaches said, ‘This guy’s just not a fit for the New England Patriots,’” Belichick said, according to comments first captured during the NFL’s 100th anniversary special and repeated in the years since.
Gronkowski’s limited recent college tape didn’t help his case either. He missed the final three games of his sophomore year at Arizona with mono and strep throat, then sat out his entire junior season after back surgery, leaving evaluators with almost nothing recent to grade.

What ultimately swayed Belichick had little to do with the visit itself. A conversation with Arizona head coach Mike Stoops changed the calculus, with Stoops vouching directly for Gronkowski’s ability in the passing game.
“Coach Stoops said, ‘You know, this guy is really good in the passing game,’” Belichick said. “That’s how we ended up with him.”
New England traded up to select Gronkowski 42nd overall in the second round of the 2010 draft, and he went on to catch 521 passes for 7,861 yards and 79 touchdowns across nine seasons in New England before an eventual return with Tampa Bay.
Belichick later credited the Patriots’ structure for keeping Gronkowski on track early in his career, a point echoed by former teammate Devin McCourty, who has said Gronkowski got away with more than almost anyone else in the building.
Gronkowski won three Super Bowls with the Patriots and a fourth with the Buccaneers before retiring in 2022, and he remains a near-lock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame whenever he becomes eligible for enshrinement.
Belichick’s own path since leaving New England has taken a very different turn. He is now the head coach at North Carolina, and he was passed over for first-ballot induction into the Hall of Fame earlier this year, a snub that drew public pushback from Gronkowski himself.
