Liverpool’s Under-21s began their preparations for the 2026/27 season with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Vauxhall Motors at the AXA Training Centre.
While pre-season results are never the primary focus, the fixture provided valuable minutes for several young Reds, with Joe Bradshaw getting on the scoresheet to rescue a draw.
Vauxhall Motors Strike First
The visitors made a bright start and took the lead early in the contest.
A well-struck free-kick from Finlay Heath gave Vauxhall Motors the advantage, putting Liverpool’s youngsters under pressure from the outset.
Played over two 30-minute periods, the match offered plenty of opportunities for the coaching staff to assess fitness, sharpness and tactical understanding ahead of the new campaign.
Bradshaw Responds
Liverpool grew into the game as the opening period progressed.
Joe Bradshaw came close before the interval, firing an effort over the crossbar as the Reds searched for an equaliser.
After the break, however, the forward made no mistake.
Bradshaw reacted well inside the penalty area to finish from close range, bringing Liverpool level and rewarding the team’s improved second-half performance.
For a young striker, getting on the scoresheet during pre-season is always a confidence boost.
Chances to Win It
Both teams pushed for a winner during the closing stages.
Liverpool came closest through Oliver O’Connor and Bradshaw, but neither side could find the decisive goal.
The match finished 1-1, a fair reflection of a competitive encounter between two committed teams.
More Than Just the Result
For Liverpool, the scoreline was always secondary.
These early pre-season fixtures are about:
● Building fitness.
● Giving young players valuable match experience.
● Assessing individuals in competitive situations.
● Preparing for the season ahead.
With Andoni Iraola placing increased emphasis on youth development throughout the club, performances in matches like these become increasingly important.
Every opportunity to impress could help academy players move one step closer to first-team involvement.
Positive Signs
Joe Bradshaw will naturally take confidence from finding the back of the net, while the coaching staff will also be encouraged by the willingness of the young side to respond after falling behind.
There is still plenty of work to do before the competitive campaign begins, but this was another useful exercise as Liverpool’s next generation continue their preparations for what they hope will be a successful season.
The result may have finished level.
The experience gained could prove far more valuable in the months ahead.
