The Philadelphia Eagles hope to distribute the football more evenly in the passing game under new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion this season after heavily relying on A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Saquon Barkley, and Dallas Goedert over the past few seasons. With Brown now a member of the New England Patriots, Smith is expected to step into the No. 1 wide receiver role and receive the lion’s share of targets. Additionally, the offense will feature a training-camp competition among Dontayvion Wicks, Makai Lemon, and Hollywood Brown for the final two starting spots.
Makai Lemon has a strong chance of winning the starting slot receiver role. The Eagles traded up to select the former USC Trojan and reigning Biletnikoff Award winner with the 20th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, Lemon suffered a hamstring injury in early June that sidelined him for the rest of OTAs and mandatory minicamp.

During his FlexWork Sports youth camp on Friday, Makai Lemon provided an encouraging injury update as reported by Olivia Reiner of The Philadelphia Inquirer. The exciting rookie said he is “feeling great” as training camp approaches in less than two weeks. Lemon added that he will be “100% ready to go” when the team holds its first summer practice on July 29.
“Makai Lemon said Friday that he’s ‘feeling great’ ahead of training camp,” Reiner said.
“Lemon, speaking at his FlexWork Sports youth camp in Aston, added that he will be ‘100%’ ready to go when the Eagles hold their first practice of the summer on July 29.”
Here’s what Geoffrey A Knox projects for Lemon’s rookie season
“That leaves Lemon. The rookie should settle comfortably into third place. Let’s call it four catches per game on average. Over a 17-game season, that lands him around 68 receptions, which would qualify as an outstanding rookie campaign,” Knox of Eagles Wire said.
“Assuming he establishes a strong rapport with Hurts early, reaching five touchdown receptions feels realistic. Would seven be surprising? It shouldn’t be. In fact, the prediction here falls somewhere between 5 and 7 scores.
“Now for the boldest prediction of all. In 2021, DeVonta Smith set the Eagles’ rookie receiving record with 916 yards. Four years later, that mark could fall. Think about it. Hurts is a better quarterback today than he was during Smith’s rookie season. The Eagles’ offense is more established. There is also a significant amount of production available following A.J. Brown’s departure. Someone must absorb those targets. Why not Lemon? The prediction here is 1,000 receiving yards, making him the first rookie in franchise history to reach that milestone.”
