Having elite three-point shooting around Luka Doncic is always something teams need to have.
There's a reason why Doncic is one of the best players in the world, and it's because he can get his teammates open at any given moment. Not only is he an elite scorer, but his ability to create offense for the rest of his team is nearly unmatched in the NBA.
That's part of the reason why the Dallas Mavericks a few years ago went out and landed Klay Thompson, one of the greatest three-point shooters of all time. Thompson, who is now in somewhat of an interesting stage of his career, would fit in very well next to Doncic even at this point.
It remains uncertain whether the Lakers would be willing to move on from any assets to land him, but a recent trade proposal wouldn't see Los Angeles give up much at all.
“In a hypothetical scenario, the Lakers would acquire five-time All-Star Klay Thompson, the Minnesota Timberwolves receive Jarred Vanderbilt and the Mavericks land Donte DiVincenzo.
“Thompson might be what a lot of younger fans like to label “washed,” but he remains one of the NBA’s best shooters. After losing Rui Hachimura, who shot nearly 60% from 3 in the 2026 playoffs, the Lakers could use a Thompson-level shooter next to Doncic. The move would also continue the Lakers’ offseason philosophy of surrounding Doncic with veterans who figure to be worthy fits,” Adel Ahmad wrote.
Replacing Rui Hachimura with Thompson is the right move in terms of a shooter, though Thompson doesn't bring what Hachimura does on the defensive side, and even offensively, Hachimura is better at this stage of his career.
Regardless, if the Lakers are just trying to find a three-point shooter, there still aren't a lot better than Thompson.
