Arsenal have learned a major William Saliba injury update following medical tests on Wednesday.
The centre-back had been managing back pain before the World Cup and followed an individual training programme with France during the tournament.

He still became an important part of Didier Deschamps’ side before lasting only around 30 minutes of the semi-final defeat against Spain.
Saliba’s history makes Arsenal’s concern understandable. A back injury ended his 2022/23 campaign in March, ruling him out of the final 11 Premier League matches.
Arsenal had led the table for much of that season but struggled defensively during the run-in and eventually finished behind Man City.
The situation is different now, though.
Mikel Arteta has greater depth, with Gabriel Magalhaes, Cristhian Mosquera, Piero Hincapie, Riccardo Calafiori, Jurrien Timber and Ben White all capable of covering at centre-back.

The Italian has been working on a few big name additions.
However, none offers exactly the same combination of recovery speed, physical strength and calm distribution as Saliba.
He has been a first-team pillar since returning from his loan spells in France in 2022, and Arsenal announced a new long-term contract in September 2025 after he had already made 140 senior appearances for the club.
A lengthy absence would force Arteta to alter his preferred partnership and place greater responsibility on Mosquera or Hincapie. It could also affect Arsenal’s transfer plans, particularly if doctors cannot provide a reliable comeback date.

That represents a clear change in tone.
Earlier reports suggested an operation was expected and that Saliba could face four or five months on the sidelines. Those claims created fears that he might miss a large part of Arsenal’s title defence.
A decision to avoid surgery could still involve an extended period of treatment, carefully controlled training and regular exams.
Arsenal will naturally conduct their own assessment when Saliba returns from international duty.
