It’s been an up-and-down career for veteran center Karl-Anthony Towns. After years of falling short with the Timberwolves, he joined a Knicks team that was starved of playoff success. Following his arrival, however, New York emerged as a major threat in the East, and what followed was his best stretch yet in the NBA.
Today, as an NBA champion, Towns has forever cemented his place in Knicks history, and he still frequently thinks about the series that changed everything. It was in the Finals against Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs that his team faced their toughest challenge, but KAT always knew he had the skills to keep up, and it’s clear that he’s not scared of anyone.
“He’s a generational talent, the next superstar of the league. But I wholeheartedly believe in my heart, I’m also a generational talent,” Towns said of Wembanyama at Fanatics Fest NYC on Friday. “My generation hasn’t passed yet, so I saved my time to utilize all that experience and stuff. I was just going out there, just doing whatever it takes for our team to win. If it wasn’t going to be a dunk or a three, I still impacted the game, especially with defensive intensity, giving us that spark we needed, especially early in the game.”
Victor Wembanyama is often called a generational superstar, on par with legends like LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and Tim Duncan. Of course, he hasn’t accomplished nearly as much as those guys, but his game is undeniable with averages of 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.0 steals, and 3.1 blocks per game on 51.2% shooting from the field. He took the Spurs all the way to the NBA Finals this year, only to lose to Towns and the Knicks in five games. It was a crushing blow, but also a reminder to everyone that Victor still has a long way to go.
“As I said, generational talent, you got to bring a generational effort to a game, and if we want to do something special that hasn’t been done in 53 years in New York, you know, I was going to have to take my game to another level,” Towns added.
With averages of 13.0 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game in the Finals, it was far from the cleanest performance for KAT, but you have to give him credit for finding other ways to contribute, like on the glass and on the defensive end. That ability is what separates him from the average center, and it’s part of the reason why the Knicks managed to capture their first championship in 53 years.
So while Victor Wembanyama is undeniably something special, Towns believes that the same can be said for himself, even though his future is much less secure. While not as flashy or as dominant as Victor, his versatile skill set was enough to make a difference when it mattered, giving the Knicks the edge they needed to win the series. If they happen to meet again in the next Finals series, the Knicks will have every reason to be confident, but they shouldn’t count on Victor getting outplayed again.
