THE DAILY BLOVIATION
We’re in the home stretch of the dead news period for the NFL and the Cleveland Browns, and starting to move into sites doing things like position-by-position camp previews and such. It’s all the same stuff year after year, as media outlets limp through the downtime before players show up for training camp.
The rookies will show up first around mid-week, but there are no scheduled media availabilities for the team, so what you’re going to get are photos of rookies walking into the Berea facility from the team’s official site and not much else until the veterans show up in less than ten days.
There’s no real news to talk about because, fortunately, the team has avoided any major off-field entanglements, so what a lot of sites wind up doing is writing about people writing about the Browns. I have a big white space on this Google Doc that I’m working on, so I guess I’ll do the same.
I brought a couple of those types of stories with me. For instance, one is Warren Sharp putting out his 2026 front seven rankings, where he said something nice about the Browns, placing them at sixth in the league despite the loss of Myles Garrett. That’s behind the Texans, Eagles, Rams, Broncos, and Seahawks, but ahead of the Steelers, the 49ers, and 27 other teams who would very much like to swap rooms with us. Top six in the league is top six in the league, regardless of who’s doing the ranking in the middle of July. Someone said something nice about the Browns, so we’re allowed to smile a little about it.
Meanwhile, there’s endless discussion about the Browns quarterback situation, with the latest being NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero noting that the quarterback horse race will be “interesting”, and saying that Watson will only be tested when he steps onto the field, while being heckled by his team’s own fans, and the game speeding up around him. We’ve seen that particular movie before, and the third or fourth sequel is rarely better than the original, which wasn’t well-reviewed, either.
Meanwhile, over in the forums, the fanbase has already moved on from mourning Ethan Pocic’s exit to mocking his new employer — the Watercooler thread on his signing is titled, with real affection, "Ethan Pocic Signs with Ratbirds." Ah, yes, nothing the Rats can do isn’t noted with scorn. From surfing over social media, it appears there’s a big gap between how Ravens fans feel about the acquisition and what the rest of the league thinks (which is not much).
Meanwhile, because the real world is boring, I at least have some interest in way-too-early 2027 mock drafts, if only to quickly scan them and see which quarterback the Browns wind up with. It’s generally not Dante Moore or Arch Manning because the Browns are perceived to be just too darn good for the season to tank that badly. So, PFSN has them picking seventh and landing Edge Dylan Stewart to torment future opponents, and then drafting quarterback CJ Carr from Notre Dame with the last pick in the first round, as it’s universally agreed that the Rams will win the Super Bowl these days.
So, there are a bunch of people saying things about the Browns based on what may or may not be good analysis, and my comments on them. I feel a little like an aggregator this morning, and it’s icky.
I was going to go completely off-topic today and talk about how my approach to managing the OBR has changed over the years, but figured even these takes from third parties are more interesting than that. Suffice it to say that the short version of that story is that the OBR has changed from an always-fun hobby to a generally fun, full-time job that sometimes requires me to make uncomfortable decisions. Maybe some other time on that one.
In the meantime, I’m planning to work on my project most of the day, then go outside, light a fire, and burn some sort of meat into oblivion. I hope you enjoy your Sunday as well, and that these bloviations have actual news to respond to in the near future.
