Cam Skattebo’s rookie season ended in gruesome fashion as the New York Giants’ running back suffered a dislocated ankle, fibula fracture and ruptured deltoid ligament on a hip-drop tackle in Week 8 last October. He still put up 410 yards and five touchdowns before the injury, enough to make him a fan favorite in New York.
After months of recovery, Skattebo returned for minicamp in June looking ahead of schedule, and with training camp opening July 28 under new head coach John Harbaugh, the vibes were good.

Then on Saturday at Fanatics Fest in New York City, the 24-year-old showed off his surgery scar to the crowd, launched into his signature backflip celebration and immediately proved why his coaching staff has been nervous about him.

Skattebo,who faced backlash for his CTE comments, walked out to a WWE-style entrance, pulled up his shorts to show fans his surgical scar, and tried the backflip that made him famous as a rookie. He missed the landing. He lost his balance and hit the ground before popping back up to play it off.
Nobody wants to see a player nine months into ankle rehab testing gravity for a crowd, especially not Harbaugh, who explicitly told Skattebo to stop doing backflips during June minicamp. A setback would jeopardize his role as the anchor of the Giants’ backfield.
It is a reckless decision that could make the front office think twice at contract time and it gives fans plenty to worry about heading into training camp. Some fans on social media also think the same way.
One fanwrote, “They’ll never give this dude a contract with his stunts.”

Skattebo has consistently stated that his rehab is on schedule, and he expects to get a green light for Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys. Just days before the event, Harbaugh publiclypraised his progress, confirming that the second-year back was tracking well for the start of training camp.
While Harbaugh has not yet commented on the Fanatics Fest fall, the stunt has already drawn major media criticism. Sports commentator Skip Baylesspublicly urged the Giants to fine Skattebo for what he called a “season-risking” and reckless decision.
The California native previously stuck a successful backflip during a charity softball game in May, but after failing to land this one, expect Harbaugh to reiterate his strict “no-flip” policy before camp opens on July 28.
