Legend has it that NBA superstar LeBron James spends over $1 million per year to maintain his body in peak condition. The ritual of professional athletes investing in self-care, training and recovery has endured since pro leagues sprouted over a century ago. For one Texas Christian University alum and North Texas resident, his investment into such matters now includes a "sports barndominium."
Former TCU Horned Frogs star and Orlando Magic guard Desmond Bane collaborated with Texas Best Construction's Josh Helm and The Barndominium Company's Stacee Lynn on an epic construction project that fused a sprawling, sleek, modern living space with a state-of-the-art mini-arena and gymnasium. The 10,000-square-foot property, which blends massive barn features with posh condominium vibes, sits on Possum Kingdom Lake, a reservoir on the Brazos River about two hours west of Fort Worth.
"Thank you for making my dream come to life," Bane said during a final tour reveal on Helm's YouTube page.

The living space is approximately 5,000 square feet and includes multiple lounge areas, a fully equipped kitchen with monument white quartz countertops and a waterfall edge, three upstairs bedrooms with walk-in closets and a massive balcony. Each bedroom offers views of Possum Kingdom Lake or the surrounding Possum Kingdom State Park. Bane installed special sound-dampening materials to keep the living areas quiet while workouts or music play through the surround-sound speakers. Helm's crew installed tongue-and-groove pine ceilings and custom cabinetry to complement the sleek modern design.
The other 5,000 square feet of property houses an NBA-sized basketball court and professional gymnasium, complete with a fully-loaded locker room. The basketball court is a professional hardwood surface with "Bane Court" painted on it, and the gym features specialized air movement and climate control for peak athletic performance. A 16-foot panoramic door connects the living area to the workout space, and the nearby locker room includes a cold plunge, custom stainless-steel sauna and laundry room.

"I've got a family and kids and it's important to me that they're close by," Bane said. "So having something here on my property that I can do my weight room stuff, my recovery, play on the court. I've got bedrooms to host the training staff upstairs. So we got everything we need right here at home."
While the construction cost is undisclosed, Helm has previously said similar construction costs are approximately $250 per square foot, which would put Bane's project at an estimated $2.5 million.
"This has been, for me, one epic opportunity to build this sports barndominium," Helm said.

Bane, who spent four seasons at TCU and graduated in 2020, was named the team's Chief Basketball Officer by Horned Frogs head coach Jamie Dixon in June. The two-time All-Conference player had his No. 1 jersey retired by the Horned Frogs last February, and it's clear this move is about establishing roots in the area.

"We've only been in it for three days now, but last night there were about ten kids running up and down through here, throwing the ball at each other, shooting hoops," Bane said. "There's going to be a lot of memories made here and a lot of progress made towards my basketball career."

The only question that now remains is: when do the ten kids get to have the most epic sleepover ever at the sports barndominium?
