Oklahoma City has now acquired seven second-round picks this offseason while cutting approximately $224 million in salary and luxury-tax payments through the trades of Dort, Isaiah Joe, and Aaron Wiggins.
Those moves have also positioned the Thunder comfortably below the second apron.
Rather than simply declining Dort's $17.7 million team option for financial relief, Oklahoma City exercised it and turned him into three future assets.
The deal also created a trade exception worth roughly $17 million and gave a key member of the Thunder's 2025 championship team an opportunity to pursue a long-term contract in Atlanta, something that was unlikely to be available in Oklahoma City.
The Hawks, meanwhile, are adding one of the NBA's premier perimeter defenders. The 27-year-old Dort will join Dyson Daniels and Nickeil Alexander-Walker in a formidable defensive wing rotation.
Atlanta also remains projected to have more than $40 million in cap space next summer. The Hawks had explored several wing options during the offseason before ultimately landing Dort.
Former No. 1 overall pick Zaccharie Risacher will get a fresh start in Dallas following a disappointing second season in Atlanta. His role diminished compared to his rookie campaign, with both his playing time and production declining.
