According to journalist Tom Barclay, the England international has emerged as an option for Mikel Arteta’s side as Arsenal reassess their defensive plans amid uncertainty surrounding Saliba’s fitness.
The French defender was forced off during the first half of France’s World Cup semi-final against Spain after aggravating a longstanding back problem. Since then, reports have suggested Arsenal are weighing up whether surgery is required, with fears an operation could rule him out for the start of the 2026/27 season.

That uncertainty has prompted Arsenal to explore potential solutions in the transfer market, and Barclay reports that Stones is now among the names being considered.
The 31-year-old is currently available as a free agent following the expiry of his Manchester City contract, making him an attractive short-term option for clubs looking to add proven Premier League experience without paying a transfer fee.
According to the report, Arsenal view Stones as a suitable short-term solution should Saliba face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Stones would also bring a wealth of experience to the Emirates. During his time at Manchester City, he won multiple Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup and Club World Cup, establishing himself as one of England’s most accomplished defenders.

His familiarity with Mikel Arteta’s coaching methods could also prove beneficial. The Arsenal manager worked closely with Stones during his time as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City, meaning the defender would already understand many of the tactical principles Arteta has implemented in north London.
Although injuries have disrupted Stones’ recent seasons, his ability to play both at centre-back and in midfield has long been admired, while his composure in possession would suit Arsenal’s style of play.
Whether Arsenal decide to pursue the move may ultimately depend on the outcome of Saliba’s medical assessments over the coming days.
The club are expected to make a final decision on the Frenchman’s treatment soon, but with concerns growing that he could miss the beginning of the new campaign, Arsenal are already exploring contingency plans.
