Spain v Argentina: Final - FIFA World Cup 2026
An extra-time winner from Ferran Torres delivered the title for Spain in a tense game, but Paredes was furious afterwards and was spotted tangling with the two Barcelona players.
Paredes was seen with his hands on Eric’s neck and then wrestled with Gavi after the midfielder tried to intervene.
The match referee then handed Paredes his second yellow card of the game, leading to his expulsion. It was the second red that Argentina saw on Sunday as Enzo Fernandez was also sent off for two yellow card offences.
Spain boss Luis de la Fuente was delighted with his team’s win but felt his players should have wrapped it up much earlier.
“I think the game should have been decided much earlier,” he said. “Dibu’s interventions prevented us from winning earlier, as they put us ahead on the scoreboard earlier, but it’s a World Cup final and you have to suffer even against ten men, and we are prepared for anything.”
The win means that Spain are world champions for a second time, while Argentina’s defence of their title ends in a narrow defeat.
