GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - With Packers training camp less than two weeks out, Green Bay is turning the page toward a fresh start after last season’s late losing skid and a string of injuries.
While some familiar names won’t be on the field right away, tight end Tucker Kraft is trending in a positive direction as he continues his recovery from a torn ACL suffered last November.
Kraft hosts free youth camp in Green Bay
----------------------------------------
Kraft spent his morning at Green Bay East High School, hosting a youth camp in partnership with CareSource. The event welcomed more than 250 campers at no cost, focusing on football fundamentals and life skills.
Kraft said the opportunity to give back carries extra meaning because he didn’t have access to camps like this growing up.
“Growing up in South Dakota, I did not have any opportunities to attend camps hosted by NFL players, so today’s opportunity is really important for me to give back to the community that I call my second home,” Kraft said.
Kraft has frequently mentioned how at home he feels in northeast Wisconsin.
“I’ve said it since the moment I was drafted here… this is all I’ve known is Green Bay, Wisconsin, obviously aside from my South Dakota roots,” Kraft said. “It’s a very similar feeling to what I grew up with, so being able to contribute to something like this… it’s moving for me.”
Teaching fundamentals at camp
-----------------------------
As the campers rotated through drills, Kraft kept things light while emphasizing fundamentals.
“We’re working on the fundamentals today, breaking down the three-point stance,” Kraft said. “We’ve got some wobbly knees, but I think we can get some athletes out of this bunch of kids.”
He added that being in Green Bay year-round gives him the chance to make an impact beyond Sundays.
“It’s great living here year-round as I do… to also have an impact, not just what I do on the field, but how I carry myself off the field,” Kraft said.
Where Kraft’s rehab stands heading into camp
--------------------------------------------
Kraft is still working his way back from the torn ACL that ended his season prematurely in November. When asked if he’ll be a full participant when camp opens, Kraft said the Packers’ training staff will continue to guide the timeline.
“We’ve had those talks with the training staff and with Gutey,” Kraft said. “You guys are going to find out as it comes out… they’re going to protect me, because they see me as an asset for this team to win a Lombardi. So that’s the goal.”
Kraft said he’s eager for the season to begin, while also appreciating time at home.
“I did leave the year prematurely, so I am excited for the season to start, but I’m soaking up as much time as I can at home with my wife and child,” Kraft said. “There’s a lot of people coming back into town, getting ready for training camp… and we’re geared up and ready to go.”
