Spain’s World Cup triumph has dominated the front pages of the country’s newspapers, with Arsenal trio David Raya, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino all receiving widespread praise following their country’s 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final.
Ferran Torres’ dramatic winner in the 106th minute secured Spain’s second World Cup crown, but the performance of Luis de la Fuente’s side as a whole has drawn huge admiration across the Spanish media, who believe La Roja stayed true to their footballing identity against an Argentina side determined to turn the final into a physical battle.
Leading Spanish outlet MARCA described Spain’s victory as being about far more than simply lifting the World Cup trophy.

“It wasn’t just about winning the World Cup, it was about saving football,” the newspaper wrote, praising Spain for refusing to abandon their possession-based philosophy despite Argentina’s attempts to disrupt the game with fouls, stoppages and physical challenges.
MARCA added: “Spain didn’t accept the invitation. They kept passing the ball. They kept believing in football.”
The publication also hailed Spain’s footballing culture, claiming the triumph was “a victory for the way we understand this sport,” while praising the work done throughout the country’s grassroots game that has produced another generation of world champions.

Although Ferran Torres naturally grabbed the headlines after scoring the winning goal, Arsenal’s players were also part of a Spanish side that controlled the final from start to finish.
Martin Zubimendi came on in extra time at the heart of Spain’s midfield, helping his side dictate possession and maintain control throughout a tense final. Alongside Rodri and Fabián Ruiz, Spain’s midfield was praised for its composure, intelligence and ability to resist Argentina’s attempts to drag the game into chaos.
Mikel Merino also played his part in another disciplined Spanish performance. While he was unfortunate to see Nico Williams’ effort ruled out after being adjudged to have interfered with Emiliano Martínez, Spanish media insisted the decision was harsh, believing Merino had made no contact with either the goalkeeper or Nicolás Otamendi.
Spain’s victory means Arsenal will begin preparations for the new season with three reigning world champions in their squad. With Raya, Zubimendi and Merino all returning to north London having reached the summit of international football, Mikel Arteta will hope their success on the biggest stage can provide another significant boost as the Gunners look to build on last season’s domestic triumph.
