Aston Villa's decision to sell Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for £117m has raised a few eyebrows in the football world with the clubs set to eclipse the British transfer record.
It's £1m more than Elliot Anderson, and with Rogers due at Stamford Bridge for an imminent medical, the deal is moving fast for all parties.
One thing for sure is that Villa will be planning what to do with the money and have already wrapped up the arrivals of Switzerland World Cup star Johan Manzambi and an announcement is imminent for the capture of Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder and past United target Joao Gomes.
Villa supporters have plenty to say about the deal for rogers, a player who was at the centre of their successful campaign, last season.
Richard Whitehouse: Well, I hoped he would stop at Villa for one more season. As Platt did in 1990, now he’s joining Chelsea, he’s got to live up to that very big price tag. At Villa Emery, he would play even though he had dry spells. Let’s see What Chelsea do when Rogers goes through a dry patch………….
Matt Harrison: Unai will sort it out - good money that, no player is bigger than the club… UTV let’s see who he gets in
Mark Jennings: Grealish for a 100m and his career went down the drain, I expect Rodgers' will do the same, so thanks for the money. Let's spend it wisely. But it does seem odd to go to a club below us and not in any European competition to further his career. UTV
Jordan Bailey: Honestly, let him go. Especially for that fee, he's not consistent enough. We'll be the ones laughing
Kem Pritchard: PSR doing its thing is what I think. Great potential not yet fulfilled in my opinion. Very poor start of season … very poor end of season, but did some magic in the middle. That, for me, is not world-class form, and the price is brilliant business for Villa . Over to Unai …
CM Soo: On the surface, it looks like Aston Villa have done a really good piece of business. But what's surprising is that they couldn't keep one of their star players, and he ended up joining a club that actually had a worse season than Villa.
Aston Villa won the Europa League last season and finished 4th in the Premier League, while Chelsea finished 10th. I honestly don't understand why roger would leave for a club that's currently in a worse position. What exactly is there to gain?
The player says Alonso was the main reason he decided to join, but let's be honest — money is probably the biggest factor. No player can guarantee they'll perform at the same level every season. But once you sign a long-term contract, you can guarantee yourself a high salary every single week.
Would a player really choose to give up Champions League football to join a club that seems to change managers almost every season?
Tom Jolliffe: It's crazy money. I don't wanna lose him, and on his day, he can be unplayable, but if I'm being honest, he's never quite lived fully up to that performance against Arsenal in the first home game of the 24/25 season (and some of those unplayable games last season) when he absolutely battered them. Granted, for as many bad performances as he had, you can't argue with his number of goals and assists. So he's a player who can play poorly but still win matches, which in itself is really valuable.
But, we'll come off with 90 odd after chucking Boro their cut, and we can put that toward a rebuild. I'd tie up Konsa immediately, then be looking at 3 AM/WLR players to fill the gaps we have.
The main thing is that replacing him has to be more effective than how we replaced Grealish, albeit Buendia has come good now, and Bailey had that excellent season. But if we bring in 2-3 from the Rogers money, they have to hit the ground running.
Nathan Crowe: After most of his performances last season, we’ve mugged them off for that price! When we lost Grealish for 100 mil a player who was on top of his game that was a massive loss for the club but the money it bought in got us to where we are now. I’m honestly not bothered about him going with that money we can invest in some real quality
Bryan Wilkinson: Thank you to Morgan for all the special moments, especially his goal in Istanbul.
Sad to lose him, but can't say no to that kind of money. Wish him all the best, and pray Manzambi can be a suitable replacement
