Palace are understood to value Lacroix at a minimum of £55m and there is little surprise that Steve Parish is prepared to stand his ground. The recent £52m transfer of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton to Tottenham has helped shape the market for Premier League centre-backs, and Palace appear intent on using that figure as a reference point in negotiations.
Chelsea’s interest has been building for some time and there is an expectation that creative solutions could be explored. The possibility of fringe players being included in discussions has already surfaced earlier this month, which suggests Chelsea are examining more than one route to completing a deal. Lacroix, now 26, is also believed to be open to the move and could yet play a part in pushing matters forward if talks progress.
World Cup Finishing Means A Market Acceleration

The timing is notable. Lacroix has spent the summer involved with France at the World Cup and featured across the latter stages of the tournament, first appearing in the 4-1 victory over Norway, then coming off the bench in the 2-0 semi-final loss to Spain, before starting the dramatic 6-4 defeat to England in the bronze medal match.

His body of work at Palace has been substantial. Since arriving from VfL Wolfsburg in 2024, Lacroix has made 98 appearances in two seasons and added major honours to his record, including the FA Cup, Conference League and Community Shield. That blend of availability, experience and high-level exposure helps explain Chelsea’s admiration.
This approach also sits within another aggressive Chelsea transfer window. Geovany Quenda and Emmanuel Emegha were lined up early, while Marco Palestra has arrived from Atalanta in a £47m move. Morgan Rogers is now on course to join from Aston Villa for a British record £117m, with a medical scheduled for Monday.
There has been movement in the other direction too. Marc Cucurella has joined Real Madrid for around £52m, Andrey Santos has moved to Manchester United for £50m, and Tyrique George has completed a permanent switch to Everton for a reported £24m. Chelsea’s squad churn remains significant, and the pursuit of Maxence Lacroix would be another clear sign that defensive reinforcement remains a priority.

From a Chelsea supporter’s perspective, this is one of those reports that immediately grabs attention because it feels plausible on several levels. Maxence Lacroix has Premier League experience, he is in his peak years, and he has already shown he can cope with the physical and tactical demands of English football. If the club are serious about building a back line capable of competing for the biggest prizes, targeting a defender like this makes sense.
The price is where the debate starts. £55m is serious money, especially in a window where Chelsea are already committing huge sums elsewhere. Even so, proven centre-backs are expensive and Palace are under no pressure to sell cheaply. If Chelsea’s recruitment team believe Lacroix is the right fit, then the fee may simply reflect the market.
There is also a broader squad point here. Outgoings have created room, and Chelsea clearly are not standing still. Supporters will want balance as much as star power. Morgan Rogers is exciting, but defensive control wins major matches, and adding a reliable, athletic centre-back could be just as important as any headline signing.
Personally, this feels like a move worth pursuing, provided Chelsea do not lose discipline in negotiations. Lacroix looks like the sort of player who can improve the starting eleven quickly, and that is exactly the kind of transfer fans want to see at this stage of the project.
