It is a matter of when, not if, the Cleveland Browns restructure Denzel Ward's contract.
Before week one of the season, all signs point to the Cleveland Browns restructuring Denzel Ward's contract. His deal stands out amongst the other Cleveland Browns contracts, here is where they all are in terms of base salary:
Denzel Ward - $16,900,000
Isaiah McGuire - $3,674,000
Cedric Tillman - $3,621,500
Ronnie Hickman - $3,520,000
Teven Jenkins - $2,000,000
Corey Bojorquez - $1,812,500
Tyson Campbell - $1,616,000
Jerry Jeudy - $1,500,000
Base salary is not the total sum that is paid to the player. It is just part of the mechanisms the team has to pay players.
The only logical reason you don't restructure a player is if you don't see them being on your roster, this could be in a trade or a cut. While the Browns could move Ward, it feels unlikely because they lack cornerback depth, they should really be focused on adding more talent as they are currently lacking behind Ward and Campbell.
The wildcard for not extending Ward is that they extend him instead, this would then effectively wrap a restructure into an extension, reducing his base salary down to the league minimum as part of the new deal.
They did restructure his $2.5m signing bonus on the 7th of March this was done as they had a deadline of it being paid on the 13th of March. With his base salary they have until week one before it starts getting paid. The question mark over this is are they keeping the door open for a trade offer that blows them away or is it because they are working towards a contract extension?
What A Restructure Means For Ward
By converting $15,600,000 of his $16,900,000 base salary into a signing bonus, alongside the $2.5m roster bonus they have already done. This leaves him with the minimum base salary for a player of his tenure which is $1,300,000. It gives them additional cap space for the 2026 season. This will most likely be used to rollover into 2027 and beyond.
Below is his new contract, even if they don't extend him this year, then next offseason becomes the decision point for the team. There is certainly a chance they could look to extend him with two years remaining but this is something they will only usually do with quarterbacks or star players like Myles Garrett. Denzel Ward would certainly be in that bucket if it wasn't for the injuries which might mean they want him to play out the 2026 season first.
Where Are The Cleveland Browns Now For Cap Space?
As things currently stand for the Cleveland Browns, they have $16,054,957 of cap space per Over The Cap. If they restructure Ward this moves them to $28,534,957. This would take them from 19th most cap space in the league to 10th.
They potentially want to find contract solutions with their three remaining players on base salaries over $3m which are Isaiah McGuire, Cedric Tillman and Ronnie Hickman. My belief is this could be a struggle for some of them. McGuire is the most likely to work something out. He can get this money guaranteed and continue working towards an extension. There is no sense in doing something for Tillman, he is better getting cut and signing elsewhere than doing a deal because being potentially wide receiver five in a contract year is a nightmare for a player. Hickman is an interesting one, I think they need to work out how their safety trio looks before pulling the trigger.
When it comes to cash to spend they still have a significant amount they can sustainably invest in the 2026 roster, especially after the Myles Garrett trade.
