Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s NBA career is primarily defined by his time with the Milwaukee Bucks, and for valid reasons. Having won the NBA title with the Bucks in 2021, Antetokounmpo cemented his place in the franchise’s history.
While much of his association with the Bucks can be attributed to the time he spent there, it goes without saying that older players were a meaningful factor in his development. Among these, former Miami Heat player Caron Butler was particularly impactful.
During a recent episode of the “Thanalysis Show,” Butler recalled a very dangerous experience involving a young Giannis Antetokounmpo on a night out with his friends. Butler continued, when he said:
“We was at a crazy little spot, Club 601. We all thought it was a gunshot. Everybody ducked, but I grabbed him just to protect him. He was special, and still is special to me, because he’s like, part of my legacy. He was my young fella. So I gotta always make sure he’s okay.”
Caron Butler’s tenure with the Milwaukee Bucks was brief, as he appeared in only 34 games for Milwaukee during the 2013-14 season. However, when noting that this was Giannis Antetokounmpo’s rookie year, Butler’s presence and actions clearly had a massive impact on the Greek forward.
Butler’s faith in Giannis Antetokounmpo, even as a rookie, is particularly noteworthy. Although he came into the league at 6’9″ with a massive 7’3″ wingspan, Antetokounmpo weighed 196 lbs., which is considerably low for a player in his position.
In his first year in the NBA, Antetokounmpo averaged 6.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.8 steals, and 0.8 blocks per game. While this was enough to see him finish seventh in ROTY voting, it is clear that Butler saw enough potential in the forward.
For the most part, Caron Butler’s judgment was solid. Given how Giannis Antetokounmpo’s popularity surged in the following years, winning two MVP awards, a DPOY, and making multiple All-Star appearances, it is safe to say that Butler made the right choice.
As a two-time All-Star, Butler would have inevitably had a lot to teach Antetokounmpo. Unfortunately, his term in Milwaukee was cut short, as he was bought out by the Bucks in 2014 and eventually signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
It is also worth noting that Caron Butler spent the early years of his career with the Miami Heat. Now, with Giannis Antetokounmpo headed to the Heat as a part of one of the landmark trades of the offseason, he and Butler will be reunited in Miami.
Now, in the capacity of an assistant coach, Butler is very capable of being an impactful presence on the roster. Given that Giannis Antetokounmpo will also struggle to establish his season early on, seeing a familiar face on the roster could be significant in helping him assert himself.
With Giannis Antetokounmpo coming on board, the Miami Heat have emerged as one of the top teams in the East. Although it is clear that Miami needs to make more moves to solidify its position in the East, the potential partnership between Antetokounmpo and Butler could be promising as the franchise hopes to mount a title push in the upcoming season.
